It is finally here, the final instalment of the Star Wars series: The Rise of Skywalker. Considering that Skywalker seemed to buy the moisture farm at the end of the LAST JEDI you can’t help but wonder which of the Skywalker is about to rise but all things considered we would carefully analyse all the scenes in the trailer
Here are 8 highlighted points I noticed in the new trailer.
1. Lots of Desert scenes
The trailer opens with Ray against what seems to be Kylo Ren’s tie interceptor in the desert and that indicates big things as several other scenes in the trailer takes place in rocky and sandy scenes like another scene that featured Finn and Poe in a rocky outcrop and another high speed chase that echoes scenes from ‘The return of the Jedi’. There has been a lot of trips to the desert in the history of the film as a result to pinpoint where these scenes take place is impossible to say for now but I’ll say it is a last trip to Tatooine where the whole Star Wars mess started, it’s only fitting to close the saga on this planet
2. Princess Leah is back for a proper farewell
From the trailer Princess Leah could be seen having a heartfelt moment hugging Ray in a forest background with a Luke Skywalker voice over intoning ‘we will always be with you’. Although, the clips are from unused scenes from the Force Awakens, since Lucas films announced in July that they wouldn’t use CGI to resurrect Princess Leah. One way or the other the scenes would have affected the storyline of the Rise of Skywalker because the movie had to be written around these scenes as stated by J.J. Abrams at the Star Wars celebration.
3. Lando is back
Lando Calrissian (the smooth operator) played by Billy D. Williams is back in the series as confirmed by his appearance in the trailer sitting in the pilot seat of the millennium falcon as last seen 36 years ago in an earlier instalment of Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi. Chewbacca is seen alongside him as his new co-pilot in the middle of a jump through outer space to Cloud city. Although fans have seen Lando earlier in the last Star Wars movie: Han Solo portrayed by Donald Glover.
4. The Dark Helmet lives on
A scintillating moment in the trailer was when Kylo Ren’s helmet was briefly shown being pieced back together by a mysteriously hairy figure (after Kylo Ren smashed it in the Force Awakens). The mask has been a key to who Kylo Ren is/wanted to be. In the Force Awakens Kylo Ren chose to accept the dark side so it will only be fitting if he wore the mask again in the Rise of Skywalker.
5. Death star
There’s a shot of our next generation heroes (Ray, Finn, Poe and BB8) paying a visit to the wreckage of the massive death star which has appeared in two-other Star Wars movies. The question is which death star is this.
6. Princess Leah’s medal
The last scene in Star Wars: A New Hope features Princess Leah awarding gold medals to both Han Solo and Luke Skywalker although, we didn’t know the significance of those medals apart from excellence in the destruction of a death star, We haven’t seen them until now in the trailer with Leah clutching the medals and there is a chance it’s Luke’s medal given the title of the episode, desert location and the voice over of Mark Hamil.
7. Appearance of a new droid
A unicycle with a megaphone for a head is confirmed by Star Wars director J.J. Abrams at the Star Wars celebration 2019 in Chicago introduced to the panel as BB8’s new friend. Dio was met with open arms at the celebration as he rolled adorably across the feet of panellists. He is confined to two scenes in the trailer. At least a host of fans will be thrilled with the cute addition.
8. The evil cackle
After the final tease before the title the screen goes dark and an ominous cackle is heard, it sounds eerily similar to that of Emperor Palpatine’s even though he fell down a blue hole and blew up(he couldn’t have survived) in an earlier instalment of Star wars but earlier experience has led us to believe that nobody is ever truly dead in Star Wars and the appearance of Ian Mcdonald (the actor portraying Emperor Palpatine) at the end of the Star Wars celebration after the trailer’s debut suggest that it is indeed Emperor Palpatine or it could be an hologram found on an old ship.
The real takeaway from this teaser is the title: The Rise of Skywalker as it refers to this 9th episode as a Skywalker saga taking the title into consideration. The name Skywalker has referred to both Anaking and Luke but if you ask Yoda he’ll say Leah could also be in there and since as at the end of the Force Awakens Luke Skywalker and the whole of the Last Jedi are dead it could mean more than a family name and could be indeed referring to our new generation heroes.
