I saw the movie “Us” last week and I totally meant to write a review earlier, but due to work among other things I am only getting around to it today.
Warning: This review will contain spoilers so please do not read if you have not seen it and want to be a bit surprised.
The movie I felt was a bit slow going, truth be told I closed my eyes for just a few minutes here and there, I don’t think I missed anything but I was wondering when the movie was going to get going at some points. I didn’t get it, heard about the awesome reviews it was getting, but didn’t see what all the fuss was about during the first part of the movie.
I think I have somewhat of a higher threshold for what constitutes as scary so when I saw the family standing outside I thought “yeah yeah…..seen it all before…..then they will start slashing and killing, most likely the husband will die for immediate effect so you start feeling sorry for the wife (main character), the kids are a 50/50 as I saw it. I felt they had a 50/50 chance of making it.”
I was pleasantly surprised when the main “villain” in the movie sat down and wanted to talk to her new prisoner and I have to admit the mystery does get good about what is going to happen next.
Side note: there are many instances in the movie where I felt that had the family been well versed in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu they would not have had any trouble. Many instances of a trap and roll. Bet you didn’t know that you would learn how to get out of many of these situations did you?
There are a few situations where if you use the trap and roll technique of jiu jitsu you wouldn’t have much trouble if you ever ran into your hockey mask wearing evil version of you that wants your life that they have no idea its better in the tunnels.

I digress….this is a movie review…focus focus focus!!!!
So, the movie does progressively get scarier I would say, I say scarier because you actually do see the family fighting their evil selves but the movie becomes a bit strange in places. We finally see the tunnel that they all came from and for some reason there is a lot of rabbits, supposedly they eat and live off rabbits. I have no idea why rabbits…actually I looked it up and Jordan Peele has mentioned that he thinks rabbits are scary as well as scissors but I feel that is debatable. I can take a rabbit no problem.
Even these rabbits, which I must mention I hate sending anyone to buzzfeed, but maybe he got the idea that rabbits are scary from these vintage bunny costumes?

The movie ends with the zombies or whatever they are all holding hands, as in a reference to ‘hands across America’ that took place in the 80’s I think……but it ends before they explain why they are holding hands. I personally don’t care, I think it is nice they conveniently line up for people like that, at least you know who the bad guys are.
Another note: I was perplexed that no one thought to take the jumpsuits after they killed one of the evil “me” versions of themselves and to survive just act like one of them. That begs the question how do they know who the humans are? Can they tell the difference between the real me and the me that just wears a red jumpsuit? How would that work?
I don’t know…but overall what I liked about the movie was that it was different and for that I recommend it, and round of applause to Jordan Peele for making a zombie movie with non-semi-zombies.
