I have recently started to think about how to “fix” Episode 9 for all the Star Wars fans furious about Episode 8 “The Last Jedi”.
So, after viewing Episode 8 I came out of the theater a bit underwhelmed, I didn’t dislike it at first, but I didn’t exactly come out of the theater feeling like I just saw another part or extension of the Star Wars main core movies that is the Skywalker saga.
I have noticed after Episode 8 that there was so much fan backlash that even spilled over into “Solo”, which I actually enjoyed minus a few things in Solo which I thought could have been done better.
So, right off the bat I felt that Star Wars Episode 8 was a bit underwhelming because of the portrayal of Luke Skywalker. I was very excited to see Luke as a master Jedi and instead we got a shell of a man who was nothing that the original trilogy portrayed as a courageous Jedi willing to sacrifice everything for his friends. Episode 7 I thought did a great job of setting up Episode 8 for something great, it left us with the scene of Luke standing at the tip of a cliff, the dramatic moment when Rey hands him the lightsaber left most fans of Star Wars excited as to what his first words after nearly 40 years were going to be.
Finally! We get to see Luke Skywalker wield his lightsaber, I personally was hoping for something along the lines of how Darth Vader was portrayed in “Rogue One”.
Instead we got Luke tossing his lightsaber over a cliff, the same lightsaber that was his originally, the same lightsaber that was the focus of fan videos such as this:
Yes…that same lightsaber was tossed for a cheap laugh and subversion in Star Wars…..the lightsaber that so many fans loved and they also built up in Episode 7 like it was a relic, Luke tossed over a cliff to make this one of the most anti climactic scenes in movie history.
Side note: I think this is one of the worst mistakes ever.
Here are a few other horrible things with “The Last Jedi” since there are so many things I didn’t like I need to get sum it up as this article would go on for many many pages:
Luke is trashed, he is a weird version of himself, he almost kills his nephew.
Leia is all powerful, which is fine since she has the force but she flys like Superman in space, which is not how the force should have been portrayed.
Snoke was killed for no reason, which they are alluding to the fact that the Emperor was killed with no backstory as well but that was a different trilogy.
Admiral Holdo and her purple hair, no plan, no conveying the plan for escape from the First Order.
The timeframe is all out of whack in this movie.
Luke dying, Leia living…….why? Why?? Why do either of them have to die?
The entire Canto Bight plan…..total nonsense…
The underlying theme/messages. Totally not what I want in a Star Wars movie, is a subliminal lecture on how good guys are bad guys and bad guys are good guys, total garbage. They felt they were being so philosophical with the whole lecture from DJ, no it was not. I think that is what made Darth Vader so menacing was we all agreed he was totally evil, unredeemable and deserved to die, but his death was very dramatic because he was a redeemed, but unredeemable character, but that is another discussion for another day.
All that being said here are a few things I actually liked:
I thought the one redeeming quality of the movie was the visuals and some of the cinematography, but that was about all.
I somewhat like Luke using the Force to become a sort of Hologram at the end but…the downsides to that exceeded the upside.
How would I “fix” Star Wars???
I have seen some people, and many people suggest to have Finn wake up from a bad dream and fix it that way, the problem with that is for myself I think that would be a cheap way to fix it, tossing out completely Episode 8 wouldn’t be as realistic either as that would have to include Disney admitting how badly they messed up with Episode 8.
A few ideas on how I would fix it:
Idea 1.) Snoke is Luke, and the real Luke is trapped or hidden out somewhere else in the galaxy and the whole thing was a trap from the beginning for some unknown reason Snoke was playing both sides, both the rebellion and the first order.
Kylo Ren killed a puppet of Snoke in the throne room, and this idea would somewhat make Snoke to be even more powerful, a bit cheesy to be honest, but I think less cheesy than having Finn wake up from a dream though.
Idea 2.) General Hux is a Sith Lord or is Snoke. This would fix many problems, first of all how Snoke somehow twirled Hux in the ship from so far away. Hux is always in black so you can argue he is dressed for the part anyway. It would be a big surprise and shock to have Hux be the real villain, and this whole time playing the part of the lesser of all the villains. Remember Snoke was bragging about how he cannot be betrayed or beaten, if Kylo Ren killed the wrong person this would make Snokes claims true if Hux in reality turns out to be Snoke himself.
So, these are just a few of my ideas, I hope I can get some feedback on this since I came up with these on my own I think they would fix so many things while being integrated into the overall story.
