Are Dragons Real Today? June 25, 2021
Are dragons real today? Can it be true that dragons are real and that they are around? That is a question that has some interesting assumptions and some interesting answers. I would say it depends. First we need to define what it means to be a “dragon”.
According to Wikipedia “A dragon is a large, serpentine, legendary creature that appears in the folklore of many cultures worldwide. Beliefs about dragons vary considerably through regions, but dragons in western cultures since the High Middle Ages have often been depicted as winged, horned, four-legged, and capable of breathing fire. Dragons in eastern cultures are usually depicted as wingless, four-legged, serpentine creatures with above-average intelligence”
Most of the worlds cultures have dragons in them from the European Middle Ages to ancient Asian cultures such as Japan and China have depictions of dragons. Where did these depictions come from? Well, that is certainly an interesting question I theorize that they came from a variety of sources from snakes to oversized reptiles and I have even theorized that they also came from bones dug of fossilized remains of dinosaurs. I believe that the ancient cultures having dug up fossils realized that there were indeed large animals and came up with the idea of dragons to explain them.
So, judging from this it makes sense that we may have several definitions of dragons here, we have dragons that are snakes, dragons that may be reptiles like large lizards and dragons that came from the fossilized remains of dinosaurs.
So, do dragons exist now?
From the definition, we could say in some ways yes they are here with us now, just now how we envision them as in depictions of the middle ages and in fantasy stories such as Lord of the Rings. If say that they are the leftovers of the dinosaur age, then…maybe not.
All that being said there are theories and myths that they do indeed exist such as with the Lock Ness monster of Loch Ness Scotland. Otherwise I don’t believe that dragons as depicted in most fantasy stories are here with us now.
One last word though….we are always finding new creatures in the deep of the ocean, and much of it is unexplored so there is a small ray of hope that somewhere there in the deep of the ocean may exist a large creature as according to some accounts we don’t know much of what is in many parts of the ocean we simply don’t. I have read somewhere that we know more about the surface of Mars than we do of the deep ocean of our own planet.
Conclusion: Small “Dragons” may exist with us but not large ones
Indeed, the conclusion of this author is that small dragons may exist depending on how you define “Dragon”, but the large fire breathing dragons of the past middle ages and other ancient cultures most likely do not exist unless we create them somehow. By that I mean would it be possible to genetically make them? I”m not sure, but I hope you have enjoyed the read!!
