~Book Excerpt Forgotten Fates, part 2~
Cassius’s fingers hooked through hers, pulling back her hand as the vial slipped through his grip. “No!”
Her gasp falling in time with the barely audible clink of glass as the vial shattered apart upon dark stone.
“No, no, no…”
With a forceful yank Amara broke free from his already loosened grip to drop onto the cold floor, desperate to save whatever she could of the potion. “This required the heart-string of a celestial and fifteen years to distil. I can’t replicate it!”
Even as she scooped the liquid to her, she could feel it dissipate beneath her touch, her fingers scraping along sharp shards of glass as the porous stone greedily soaked up her precious brew. “Dark gods…”
She was going to be sick, what had she done?. What had HE done?.
“We had a deal, demon. You lied to me!”
The soft rustle of fabric had her glaring up at the demon as he slid down the sofa to sit at her side.
“I didn’t lie to you Mara. The agreement was that you would answer my questions and I would take the potion. And I did…”
The corner of his lip curled up, as if unable to fight back a grin. “I graciously took the vial from you when you handed it to me. I never agreed to drink.”
“No… that’s not… ” Her jaw slackened, brows raising in disbelief as realization struck.
“oh hells.” Misery swamped her, even as the sin- eater smiled.
“I wondered how long it would take for you to catch on. You’re usually not this easy to bait.” His smirk more than a little self-satisfied.
His warm hands closed over hers, pulling her bloodied fingers away from the glass shards. The gentleness of his touch shattering what remained of her already broken heart.
“Foolish demon, you’ve just damned us both…”
