An interview with Inés Vega Escritora
How did you get into writing?
I started writing as a child. I’ve always loved reading and then the ideas in my head were a thousand. Then one day my father gave me a newspaper and told me to write in it what I could think of, not only about day to day, but everything. And so I started. Then at school, my teachers liked my stories and they proposed to participate in competitions. So I did, and stayed several times in third place and with special mention.
What can you tell us about your daily routines that help you focus and your creative habits? So, for example how do you come up with some of your ideas and inspiration for your book?
I usually try to write every day. Sometimes I can not because I have other obligations, but it is something I always try to do. I do it in a quiet place, almost always in the living room of my house or in the room. And something that I always put on is instrumental music. I plug in the headphones and according to what I plan to write I prepare the music for it. As for ideas, sometimes they flow alone, either sleeping or drinking coffee. Other times the music itself inspires me some scene. At that moment if something happens to me and it is going to happen in some other chapter, I park the one I am writing and I sign the ideas. That’s how I make sure that nothing happens to me.
Is this book very personal for you? If so, how?
It’s personal because it was the first. The original idea started when I was 11 years old. It started as a story, but years later it was retaking it and on each occasion it lengthened it. Until in my adolescence I decided to turn that story into a novel. I took my time, I did not want to let the story go. And until I found myself completely comfortable with it, I did not decide to publish it.
GRUPLIN
THE THREE TESTS
How did you come up with the book title?
Well looking at a French dictionary. Yes, it sounds weird, but at first I did not know what I would call the main character. I had thought and written about the events but he still had no name. When there was little left to finish the story I discovered myself watching my bookstore. I looked at the titles of the books enthralled, until the dictionary caught my attention. So even without understanding French (since I do not speak it) I took the book and began to look at its pages and the meaning of the words. Until combining the names of Gruplin came out.
Plot and Synopsis
Can you describe what the book plot and give a detailed synopsis of the book, of course without any spoilers.
Gruplin is a small dwarf of the forest, who leads a peaceful life in a beautiful and quiet town, but who is anxious to discover what is beyond the mountains that can be seen from his home. He leaves for the adventure, after leaving his friends a scarf to which he attributes magical properties. Soon, after starting his new path, and out of the protection offered by his region, he will make a terrifying discovery about his origins, which will mark his destiny forever. Forced by his past, will take a dangerous route with the intention of overcoming three tests and get a coveted talisman. A fierce battle, magic, an insurmountable loss and love, will set the course of this youth fantasy novel. A trip will take Gruplin from being a shy young man, to a brave adult.
Themes or Messages
What themes and deeper meanings or messages can we expect to find in this book if any? Is there any deep meanings or philosophical questions being explored in the book?
I honestly do not like comparisons. I have had reference authors like J.K. Rowling or Tolkien but whoever reads my novel will realize that nothing has to do. And although I obviously admire these writers very much, I could not compare myself to them or be correct. I think that above all it is very important that a writer is humble and that he does not feel better than others.
Off the wall question, but would some of the issues being explored in the book relates to us here in the real world?
It is a fantasy story mostly. Although there are relationships such as friendship, courage or love that coexist in reality. But what is the creation of the world and the perfonajes is completely imaginary.
Setting
What can you tell us about the setting that we will be seeing in this book?
Well look, it’s a book that tells 20 chapters plus an epilogue that completes the ending. The reader will also find some illustrations where he will meet characters and the map of the ppr places where the protagonist will pass. There are also illustrations of some magical object. It is a youth book but you can also read adults who want to have a good time. There is adventure, fantasy, love, a battle. They will be reflected in the protagonist michos feelings, such as illusion, fear, learning in general until the end
What cultures or societies can we expect to see and can you tell us about how you came up with creating these societies? Was it difficult to get deep into how the societies function?
The story, although it takes place in a world dominated by magic and fantastic creatures, is also set in medieval times. So I looked for information about clothing, meals, jobs that were done by citizens, for example. I also had to know a bit how a castle is, its parts, and for the battle everything related to attacks and weapons. It took time because in addition all this information should appear so that the younger ones understand it and that it looks real without becoming a history book. But in turn it was nice to imagine each character according to where.
Tell us about the history of the land or world or worlds that we will be exploring through out the book?
Well, we started in a small village inhabited by dwarves. They are governed by a district and surrounded by two other algó remote villages. They are not too developed, imagine them as simple peasants. Gruplin, the protagonist, has never left here. Until that day when he decides to take the trip. From that moment the reader will realize that beyond there are extraordinary things, not just places but the creatures that make it up. We will go through a cemetery, discover caves, a magical forest. In short, we will travel throughout a country called Galathan. For this I also had to do my calculations and think how long it would take the characters from one place to another, because the novel does not develop in a single day and the distances if we compare them with a real country are not short.
Characters
What can you tell us about some of the main characters and villains in this book?
Let’s start with the main character Gruplin. We are talking about a shy young man, who has grown up with a peasant woman and her friends. He has never gone beyond his village, so he is excited to know the world. But what he does not know is that there will be more problems to overcome. At first he doubts if it has been a good idea to want to know, but with the passage of history the reader will see how Gruplin begins to become more powerful. After all, something similar happens in real life. Life gives us blows that little by little make us stronger.
Of villains I will tell you about Ryd. It is characterized by being a magician who is also very ambitious. That way of being leads him to become who he is, a cold man without feelings.
Of the supporting characters, I’d like to tell you about Thonmy. He is one of Gruplin’s best friends and he is also a dwarf. With him the reader will know what true friendship is, because Thonmy is always willing to support Gruplin no matter what.
They are not the only characters, there are many more who will be incorporated into the novel little by little.
But I do not want to reveal too much to avoid making a spoiler.
