I am Skywalker. Not Jedi. Not Sith. Something more.
Huge Star Wars fan. I’ve been buying, playing with the figures since I was little even chewing the leg off my older brother’s Luke Skywalker when I was teething. Star Wars has been a part of my family since I can remember and now… the Skywalker Saga is coming to an end. Excited and nervous as I am for the new movie I decided to do a quick breakdown of the first trailer.
First thing I noticed was the Episode IX trailer opens similar to the trailer for The Force Awakens. A black screen… heavy breathing, standing on a desert world. Big difference this time is instead of Fin we see Rey. Is this a return to Jakku? Tatooine? Most likely Jakku given the way the sequel trilogy has been emulating the original trinity. However, a return to Tatooine would be a welcome change since it hasn’t been featured in this particular trilogy yet. Also if it is Jakku there is a severe lack of crashed Star Destroyers.
Vast. Empty. How did Rey get here? Why?
A Tie Silencer similar to Kylo Ren’s appears. Major differences here are addition of red marks to the outer hull. A look at the pilot makes me think this isn’t Kylo Ren but maybe an elite fighter pilot or one of the Knights of Ren who never appeared in ‘The Last Jedi’ but are rumored to appear more here.
And of course there was a time jump and Rey has fixed Luke’s blue light-saber making it her own.
Easily one of the coolest parts of the trailer I can totally imagine just sitting in the writer’s room playing with the vehicles and figures and acting this out.
After Rey’s epic flip we are treated to a glimmer of several shots including one of what looks like an A-Wing over a mysterious planet that could be Endor or even the moon Yavin 4. Either way it is lit up and could be a base or city.
First shot of Kylo Renkilling people. Rebels? Knights of Ren? Is he securing his position as Supreme Leader now that Snoke is dead? A lot of questions but one thing are obvious…. he still has A LOT of rage.
And the helmet is back. More red. Strange thing about this image though… definitely not Kylo Ren’s hands.
In the next shot we see Finn, Poe, BB-8, and newcomer D-0 (Dio) back on the desert planet.
Fade used throughout the trailer.
The best surprise of the trailer. The welcome return of Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. An exciting shot that also features Chewbacca played by Joonas Suotamo (who also played Chewie in ‘The Last Jedi’ and ‘Solo’) after being passed the torch by the late great Peter Mayhew. I love how the new trilogy shows hyperspace in the films and putting Lando back in a cape similar to his adventure in ‘Solo’ is fantastic.
It looks like this film isn’t just going to be an adventure but that there is going to be an epic space battle. Does this mean another Death Star? Starkiller? OR is there going to be s Sun Crusher similar to what appears in the legends. We’ve seen the Maw in ‘Solo’ so maybe that was a hint?
A great shot of our heroes and C-3PO on some kind of skiff with scavenge. Digging Poe’s scarf. This part of the trailer also shows Stormtroopers with jet packs similar to Boba Fett and an A-Wing crashing before making our eyes water.
A beautiful shot of Rey and Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) done with unused footage from The Force Awakens. This is definitely going to be an emotional rollercoaster. We also see the medallion from A New Hope.
A lot of rumors have pointed to both the First Order and the Resistance hunting down both Jedi and Sith artifacts (Kyber crystals and McGuffins). And after we get our final shot of all of our heroes together on a NOT-desert world (Yavin 4?) as they look out and we see the remains of the first Death Star, rumored but most likely given the design around the laser. This was another huge surprise especially as the last laugh at the end reveals our heroes are going to be face to face with the greatest evil in the galaxy.
Somehow in someway the Emperor is back. Has he been pulling the strings? Was Snoke nothing but a puppet? Are they pulling from the Dark Empire comics and having the Emperor come back as a clone? A sith ghost? There is concept art in the Force Awakens art book that shows Rey scavenging the Death Star. Maybe it’s possible they aren’t just making this up as they go.
Some kind of dark side nexus like the cave on Dagobah? Has Palpatine been taking lessons from Sauron?
Left with more questions than answers there are a few things we know for sure. The First Order and the Resistance are still at war. There has been a time jump. We are going to see more planets and have more to explore. Episode IX comes out this December and concludes the journey that started generations ago but this is far from the end of Star Wars.
