Who would have thought that from the same studio that brought us that god awful Emoji movie we would get something like this. Take a journey through the Spider Verse multiple Spider-men and women.
The story follows Miles Morales and his journey to becoming Spiderman. Through means that I won’t spoil here he runs across other Spider-men from different dimensions like Peter Parker, Spider Gwen, Spider Pig and my personal favorite, Spider-man Noir, voiced by the always amazing Nicholas Cage. The unique thing about this movie is that Miles becomes the Spiderman that we know from the comics all the way at the end of the movie. The hole movie is him learning the ropes, how it all works and what it means to be a hero. All the other movies that we have seen it always goes like this: Peter gets his powers, uncle Ben dies, the camera zooms to a sketch book where he draws the costume and suddenly he is Spiderman for some time. Not in this movie. For some this may seem odd but for me I found it refreshing
The first alternate Spiderman that we meet is Peter Parker. In the trailers from what I saw he looked like a slob, something that was a bit strange if you know Peter from the comics. Lucky they give an explanation for that. He acts as a mentor figure for Miles and the chemistry between these two is amazing. We get a much older and more experienced Peter Parker, someone who has been doing this for some time. When I saw from the very first trailer that they had castes Jake Johnson as Peter Parker I was skeptical. I didn’t think that he would feet the character with his voice. Thankfully I was wrong. He was awesome in the role. The same can be said about Shameik Moore who voices Miles Morales. He is most famous for his role in the 2015 comedy “Dope”. We can be sure that we will be seeing more stuff from him in the future. As much as this is Spiderman’s year, earlier this year with the release of the PS4 game and now this movie, it was also the year of the Kingpin. Firstly in the PS4 game, then in the Netflix’s show Daredevil, and now here in the newest animation. Voiced by Live Schriber, who comic book fans know him for playing Saber tooth in X-Men Origins, delivered a performance on par with that of Vincent D’Onofrio. He was scary, menacing and really made the Kingpin come to live.
The only thing that I didn’t like about the movie was the animation. It’s not that it was awful, in fact it was really good, but at times it felt like the frame rate dropped. When the action was happening it is fast and heart-pounding, which is great, and then it would suddenly drop. But that is just a little gripe in an otherwise awesome movie.
In conclusion if you are a Marvel fan, Spiderman fan or if you enjoy movies with great story and a lot of heart, that this is the movie to see this week. Be sure to check it out. You won’t be disappointed.
My name is Dimitar. I am 21 and I currently study Nanotechnology and I am in my second year in college. Ever since I was little I loved reading comics and watching movies, especially superhero movies and fantasy. I first discovered my love for geek culture when I watched the 90’s animated Spiderman cartoon. I remember my cousin had all the seasons on VHS and I would watch the mover and over again. I also enjoy playing video games as well as watching TV shows. I’m a huge fitness fan as well and I think I got that obsession from watching all those super humans running and jumping around. My hope is that with these articles that I am writing I can share some of my love for these things to you.
