Mortal Kombat 2021
Mortal Kombat 2021 was a highly successful movie and according to denofgeek, grossed nearly 5 million more than anticipated and made more money than Wonder Woman 1984 during the pandemic shutdown. This is highly encouraging for the Mortal Kombat franchise, and demonstrates that audiences are more than willing to let it have that rated R rating to see the famous “Finish Him!!” fatalities that Mortal Kombat is known for. The big question many fans have is was it enough for a sequel?
Already fans were anticipating who would play Johnny Cage in the sequel. Rumors spread that Johnny Cage would be played/shoud be played by Ryan Reynolds since he did such a fantastic job in Deadpool. Would Ryan Reynolds make a good Johnny Cage? I think overwhelmingly from what I have seen in other blogs the answer is yes. I do believe they should make an attempt to cast Ryan Reynolds into the role.
Movie Review of Mortal Kombat
I have already written about a pre movie analysis about my thoughts on Mortal Kombat 2021. I watched it a few weeks ago with a few friends of mine and my initial impression was that it could have been better, but given that the budget was actually not much at around 55 million, it was an ok movie. I wasn’t really feeling the story all that much there wasn’t much of a tournament either they sort of just fought, so am assuming that there will be a tournament later perhaps in a sequel?
I think what really got into peoples minds about the movie was the trailer. The trailer was very good and since we had been stuck in a covid shutdown for almost a year gave us something to finally look forward to and Mortal Kombat was pretty much the first movie I personally was looking forward to in a long time. Audiences were not very thrilled with Wonder Woman 1984, due to the unexpected low numbers for that release I think Mortal Kombat was somewhat of a surprise hit given its budget.
The Good: For me, the great points about the movie were the cinematography and the two main ninjas of the series Sub Zero and Scorpion. Those two really made the movie, although apparently Kano had a lot of great reviews and the actor was surprised at how much his character was loved. Should they bring back Kano? I don’t know…..I somewhat hate when writers use cheap and overused reasons to bring back dead characters…you can always use magic and time travel to bring back dead characters and this is a cheap move for me that shows a lack of some creativity. So why am I not writing the new movie? Oh just use magic to bring him back!!! Maybe they shouldn’t have killed him in the first place. Anyway…sorry about the rant there but Kano was great as was the storyline about Scorpion and Sub Zero I thought had a lot of depth to it.
The Bad: I felt they went into outworld way to quickly and outworld is very boring in my opinion. I was never a fan of outworld anyway, but the desert scene didn’t have much to look. I think they could have started out with the original Mortal Kombat storyline about the tournament as well instead of a standard written story.
Will There Be A Sequel to Mortal Kombat 2021??
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I think they will make one. I think the numbers show that with a low budget and considering the fact that it was during the pandemic shutdown the movie still did much better than expected, but the one question I think has people buzzing is who will play Johny Cage? Do you think Ryan Reynolds will play Johnny Cage? I think that would be pretty awesome to see, although getting an actor like Ryan Reynolds would require a massive budget for not only him as an actor but to lure someone like him into a movie that traditionally is more lower budget than most blockbuster movies would be a gamble for the movie studios. Not sure what his thoughts are totally but he did make a tweet about it that seemed a bit funny. He tweeted a picture of himself dressed as a Johnny Cage. What do you guys think? I thought it was funny.
What do you guys think? Do you think there are just too many open questions about the new movie and clues, hints, and other things left behind to not have a sequel?
